RECIPES FROM TWO DIFFERENT ERAS.
The more things change, the more they remain the same. This phrase was coined by French writer Jean- Baptiste Alphonse Karr, in a rather sarcastic way. But if we look around us, we find that many things our grandmothers and great grandmothers were doing , the home remedies which they churned out every
time we had a tummy ache or tooth ache are being used in modern times. Now in these days of Lockdown, everyone is worried about how to increase their immunity to keep the Corona Virus at bay or how to detox their bodies. Here we have Recipes by two of our SJK Pink Sisters, one from a bygone era giving the age-old Recipes for Kadha - Aarthi V. Karanam’s Great-grandmother’s Recipe which is widely used to this day and Calcium Shots by Alpana Shah.
Do try them out and we hope they will be beneficial for you.
I. Here is Aarthi V. Karanam sharing some of her Great-Grandmother’s Recipes with you.
Every time the skies thunder and the heavens open up to shower rains that cleanse away dust,
grime and sins, I invariably remember the laughing wrinkled face of my great grandmother! Come the monsoons and she used to look and smell like the medicine man of yore with her ‘potlis’ of different herbs and the way she used to administer different concoctions.
She seemed to have a remedy for every malady!
The morning used to begin with the Ginger Kadha on an empty stomach.
GINGER / ADRAK KA KADHA
Adrak/Ginger – 1 inch
Fresh haldi/turmeric– ¼ inch
Ajwain seeds - ¼ tsp
Ground Pepper – a pinch
Water 2 Cups
Boil water and drop in all the ingredients.
Cover. Switch off the gas when half of the liquid has evaporated.
Ladle in small tumblers and drink on an empty stomach.
Add a few fresh Tulsi leaves and if required, jaggery powder to enhance taste for small kids.
Drink this and observe how this builds up little appetites and revs up your digestive system!
Another recipe from her bag of magic, especially now in the wake of Covid-19 is a homemade
equivalent to store bought Chyawanprash; a real God send that can be had in the morning by
the entire family for better immunity.
